"At that time, the Buddha was reverently surrounded by a multitude of immeasurable hundreds of thousands as he expounded the Dharma for them." This second section clarifies that the Buddha manifested spiritual transformations to inspire awe in beings and cause them to believe. If one casts a luminous pearl at a person in the dark of night, will they not reach for their sword? How much more so with that which is profound and wondrous: if it is transmitted without faith, ordinary beings easily follow external appearances but find it difficult to awaken to principle. Therefore, spiritual transformations without bound are deployed to lead them to accept and practice it. The text has two distinct parts: first, explaining the Buddha's manifestation of an exquisite body; later, explaining Ratnarāśi's offering of parasols. The preceding text has three parts: doctrine, metaphor, and synthesis. This is the first, manifesting the exquisite body. Formerly, when expounding the Hīnayāna, the Dharma was slight and the physical marks inferior; now, being about to expound the Mahāyāna, the Dharma is supreme and the physical marks supreme. The Lotus Sūtra says: 'Wearing ragged and dirty clothes and holding a vessel for clearing away dung'—this signifies the former expounding of the Hīnayāna and the manifestation of inferior marks. It also says: 'Within its gate, he sat upon a lion throne with an array of treasures'—this signifies the expounding of the Mahāyāna and the manifestation of exquisite marks. Thus, the verses below, 'His eyes are pure, long, and broad,' etc., praise the exquisite marks and the expounding of the Dharma; 'neither existent nor nonexistent,' etc., praises the supreme Dharma; 'At first beneath the tree of the Buddhas,' etc., praises the inferior marks; and 'Turning the wheel of the Dharma three times,' etc., praises the expedient Dharma.
