"Just as the king of Mount Sumeru rises conspicuously out of the great ocean, he was settled upon a lion throne of manifold jewels, outshining the entire great assembly that had gathered." Mount Sumeru, etc., is the metaphor; being settled upon manifold jewels, etc., is the synthesis. Sengzhao says: "'Sumeru' in the language of Qin means 'Wondrously High Mountain'. Situated in the midst of the great ocean, the portion above the water is 3,360,000 li across. The Tathāgata, situated in the midst of the fourfold assembly, possesses an awe-inspiring presence that transcends all, his light eclipsing the great assembly just as a golden mountain stands conspicuous out of the vast ocean."
