"Preaching the removal of the eight difficulties is the bodhisattva's pure land. When the bodhisattva attains Buddhahood, his realm is free from the three bad destinies and the eight difficulties." The eight difficulties are: the three paths, the northern continent [Uttarakuru], the heaven of thoughtlessness, worldly sophistry and heterodox eloquence, before or after a Buddha, and being born deaf or blind. Some say that the wheel of vowing to be born in wholesome places removes the first five difficulties; the wheel of giving rise to right vows removes worldly intellect and eloquence; the wheel of meeting good persons removes being before or after a Buddha; and the wheel of deeply planting wholesome roots removes being born deaf or blind. Furthermore, various sūtras explain that hearing the name of a Buddha, the name of a bodhisattva, the name of the physical marks, the name of a sūtra, the name of a dhāraṇī, or the two characters 'eternal abiding' all remove the three bad destinies and the eight difficulties, enabling one to see the Buddha and hear the Dharma. Moreover, the eight difficulties are the utmost calamities, and being able to eliminate them is of the greatest benefit; the practice is not extremely arduous, yet its saving power is immense. How can practitioners fail to exert themselves?
