"At that time, the elder Vimalakīrti thought to himself: 'I lie ill in bed.'" The text of the chapter has two parts: first, thinking to himself about his illness; later, the Buddha ordering [the disciples] to inquire after his illness. This first part is thinking to himself first. [Dao]sheng said: "Thinking to himself that he lay ill means lamenting his illness. Where there is a physical body, there is illness; this is merely the ordinary course of the world. How could those who have reached understanding lament it when realizing it? Yet the sons of the elders of Vaiśālī all gaze upon the Buddha and listen to the Dharma. Vimalakīrti ought to be among them as well, but hindered by illness he does not participate. In principle, this causes lament. Therefore, he relies upon it to extol the Dharma and invite the Buddha to inquire after his illness."
