"'At that time, Vimalakīrti came and said to me, "Hold, Śāriputra! You need not take this sitting to be quiet meditation."'" This third [part], from "At that time, Vimalakīrti..." onward, cites the incident of reprimand. The text has three parts: the general, the specific, and the conclusion. This is the initial general reprimand: You need not take this sitting to be true sitting. The mind's essence is free from conceptual thoughts and its nature is fundamentally quiescent. Realizing this and abiding peacefully is called true quiet meditation. How could it be like the two vehicles' revulsion toward distraction and delight in concentration, taking that to be quiet meditation?
