時維摩詰來謂我言。唯大迦葉有慈悲心而不能普。捨豪富從貧乞　此下第三廣引彈事文三。初呵悲劣。二明頭陀不真。三捐伏。此初也。迦葉因苦生悲故不普。菩薩了生如幻苦樂一如等起大悲。而無緣念故能普也。

"At that time, Vimalakīrti came and said to me: 'O Mahākāśyapa, you have a mind of kindness and compassion, yet it is not universal; you abandon the wealthy and beg from the poor.'" From here down is the third part, extensively citing the matter of reproach. The text has three parts: first, rebuking the inferiority of his compassion; second, explaining that his dhūta is not genuine; third, yielding and submission. This is the first. Kāśyapa generated compassion conditioned on suffering, hence it was not universal. Bodhisattvas understand that beings are like illusions and that suffering and pleasure are identical; they arouse great compassion equally, yet without conditioned thoughts, and thus it is able to be universal.
