維摩詰言。唯須菩提取鉢勿懼。於意云何。如來所作化人。若以是事詰寧有懼不　此下四淨名安慰文三。初慰問。次答。後釋。此初也。肇曰。淨名欲令善吉弘平等之道。無心以聽美惡斯順。而善吉本不思其言。迷其所說故復引喻以明也。

"Vimalakīrti said: 'Subhūti! Take the bowl and do not fear. What do you think? If an illusory person created by the Tathāgata were to be questioned on these matters, would he have any fear or not?'" From here down is the fourth part, Vimalakīrti's comforting [of Subhūti], in three sections: first, comforting and asking; next, answering; finally, explaining. This is the first. Sengzhao says: Vimalakīrti wished to cause Shanji to propagate the way of equality, listening without mind so that fine and foul would all be accorded with. But Shanji originally had not reflected upon his words, and was bewildered by what was said; therefore [Vimalakīrti] further adduced an analogy to clarify it.
