時我。世尊。聞此芒然不識是何言。不知以何答。便置鉢欲出其舍　此第三置鉢也。天台云。進非其敬退非其悲故置之也。肇曰。淨名言。逆而理順。善吉似未思其言故不識是何說。便置鉢而出也。

"At that time, World-Honoured One, hearing this I was bewildered and did not recognise what words these were, nor did I know how to answer. So I set down the bowl and wished to leave his house." This is the third part, setting down the bowl. Tiantai says: Going forward was not his respect, and going backward was not his compassion, so he set it down. Sengzhao says: Vimalakīrti's words were contrary, yet their principle was in accord. Shanji did not seem to have reflected upon his words yet, and therefore did not recognise what kind of discourse this was, so he set down the bowl and went out.
