佛告摩訶迦旃延。汝行詣維摩詰問疾　肇曰。迦旃延南天竺婆羅門姓也。以本姓為名。弟子中解義第一。有說迦旃延。此云文飾也。又云剃髮種也。

The Buddha told Mahākātyāyana: "Go to Vimalakīrti to inquire after his illness." Sengzhao says: Kātyāyana is a South Indian brāhmaṇa clan name; he was named after his original clan. Among the disciples, he is the foremost in explaining doctrines. Some say: "Kātyāyana" is translated here as "adorned with patterns"; others say it means "hair-shaving clan."
