什曰：南天竺婆羅門姓也。善解契經者也。肇曰：迦旃延，南天竺婆羅門姓也，即以本姓為名。弟子中解義第一也。
[Kumāra]jīva says: A Brahmin clan name of South India. One who is skilled in understanding the sūtras. [Seng]zhao says: Kātyāyana is a Brahmin clan name of South India; he took his original clan name as his personal name. Among the disciples, he is foremost in understanding meaning.
