"'That the five appropriated aggregates are thoroughly understood as empty and without arising is the meaning of suffering.'" Sengzhao says: The five contaminated aggregates that receive defilement in birth and death are called appropriated aggregates. The Hinayana takes the arising of the appropriated aggregates, whereby all sufferings are produced, as the meaning of suffering. The Mahayana thoroughly understands that the appropriated aggregates are constantly empty internally and externally, fundamentally without arising—who then produces suffering? This is the true meaning of suffering. The Great Sūtra says: "Ordinary beings have suffering but no truth; the two vehicles have suffering and have truth; bodhisattvas understand suffering, have no suffering, and have the true truth." The remaining meanings can be seen by analogy with this.
