"'Kātyāyana, that all dharmas ultimately do not arise and do not cease is the meaning of impermanence.'" This is the second, revealing the true doctrine of the true mark. From here down, five doctrines break attachments: the names differ, but the principle of the true mark is one. Sengzhao says: The Hinayana observes dharmas arising and ceasing as the meaning of impermanence; the Mahayana takes non-arising and non-ceasing as the meaning of impermanence. The name "impermanence" is the same, but the profound purport transcends [the Hinayana]. Daosheng says: Speaking of impermanence is based on verifying the extinction of things. If in the end there is extinction, how could there not be so at the beginning? If the beginning is indeed so, then arising is not fixed. When arising is not definitively arising, who can definitively fix extinction?
