所以者何。憶念昔者有二比丘。犯律行以為恥。不敢問佛。來問我言。唯優波離。我等犯律。誠以為恥。不敢問佛。願解疑悔得免斯咎　二略釋文二。初來問。後為解。此初也。肇曰。愧其所犯不敢問佛。以優波離持律第一故從問也。

"Why is this? I recall in the past there were two monks who violated the rules of the Vinaya and felt ashamed of it. Not daring to ask the Buddha, they came to ask me, saying: 'O Upāli, we have violated the Vinaya, and we are truly ashamed of it. We dare not ask the Buddha. We pray that you will resolve our doubts and remorse, so that we may escape this fault.'" The second part briefly explains, having two sections: first, their coming to ask; second, his explaining for them. This is the first. Sengzhao says: "Ashamed of what they had violated, they did not dare ask the Buddha. Because Upāli was foremost in upholding the Vinaya, they followed him to ask."
