"Just as the Buddha has said: 'Because the mind is defiled, sentient beings are defiled; because the mind is pure, sentient beings are pure.' The mind is also not within, not without, and not in between. As it is with the mind, so it is with the defilement of offenses; and so it is with all phenomena: they do not depart from Suchness." This third section cites the Buddha's words as proof; it has citation, explanation, conclusion, and analogical extension. Sengzhao says: "This is tracing back to understand the origin. Holding to the origin to understand the branch, and keeping to the mother to see the child: the Buddha said that the defilement and purity of sentient beings all arise from the mind. If one seeks the origin of the mind, it is not in the three places. Since the mind has no location, the defilement of offenses can be known [likewise]. As for 'so it is with all phenomena,' Sengzhao says: 'The myriad phenomena in their multiplicity all arise from the mind; how could it be so only for defilement and purity? Therefore, all phenomena are also like this, not departing from Suchness. Suchness means the original mark of Suchness.'"
