"Upāli, all phenomena arise and cease without abiding, like an illusion, like lightning. Phenomena do not wait upon one another, not even abiding for a single thought-moment." The second clarifies that because all phenomena do not abide, they have no intrinsic nature. Sengzhao says: "This completes the previous meaning of signless and eternally pure. Phenomena are like lightning, constantly renewing without pause, arising and ceasing without waiting upon each other. In the snap of a finger, sixty thought-moments pass. Phenomena do not even abide for a single thought-moment; how much less could they remain long? Being without abiding, they are like an illusion; being like an illusion, they are not real; not being real, they are empty; being empty, they are eternally pure. Thus, each and every thing is pure; what burden of offenses could there be in oneself?"
