This is the third part, explaining the subduing of the bodhisattvas of upāya to lead them back to the perfect and subtle. Since the śrāvakas previously offered their refusals, the bodhisattvas are appointed next. Although all who produce the mind of bodhi are generally called bodhisattvas, their faculties can be sharp or dull, and the teachings can be gradual or sudden. Some cultivate practice in phenomena without yet awakening to principle; some have awakened to partiality without yet advancing to perfection; some have realized gradually without yet reaching the summit of the sudden. Now, intending to turn phenomena back toward principle, break through partiality to advance to perfection, and reprove the gradual to arrive at the sudden, he therefore commands them to inquire about the illness to subdue them. All are the Buddha's work of bodhisattvas, hence the title of the chapter. The text has two parts. First, individually explaining the four great beings. Here, first, the Merciful One.
