於是佛告彌勒菩薩。汝行詣維摩詰問疾　文二如前。此初命也。彌勒此云慈氏。肇曰。彌勒南天竺婆羅門姓出。此姓即以為名。五百弟子皆以不任故復命菩薩。將備顯淨名難酬之德也。

Thereupon the Buddha addressed Maitreya Bodhisattva: "Go to Vimalakīrti and inquire about his illness." The text has two parts as before; this is the first, the appointment. "Maitreya" is translated here as "the Merciful One." Sengzhao says: "Maitreya was born into a brāhmaṇa clan of South India; he took this clan name as his personal name." Since the five hundred disciples were all incompetent, he again appointed the bodhisattvas, intending to fully reveal Jingming's virtue, which is hard to match.
