"If Maitreya attains extinction, all sentient beings should also attain extinction. Why is this? The Buddhas know that all sentient beings are ultimately quiescent and extinguished; this is the mark of nirvāṇa, and they do not undergo extinction again." Third, this refutes it in terms of the equal quiescence and extinction, which is the virtue of liberation. Nirvāṇa is translated here as extinction. If dharmas are originally unarisen, then currently having no extinction constitutes quiescence and extinction; thus all sentient beings are originally extinguished. How could Maitreya alone realize it? Sengzhao says: The original nature is constantly extinguished; what is there now to be extinguished again? Daosheng says: When the end reaches extinction, the extinction at the beginning is verified. If the beginning were indeed extinguished, how could the end be extinguished? Knowing that sentient beings are themselves the mark of nirvāṇa and do not undergo extinction again means that complete extinction is in fact non-extinction.
