於是維摩詰問文殊師利。何等為如來種　二問如來種也。文五。一問。二答。三徵。四釋。五歎述。此初也。前生死雖非道菩薩化之為佛道。今煩惱雖生死種眾生悟之為如來種也。

Thereupon Vimalakīrti asked Mañjuśrī, "What is the lineage of the Tathāgata?" Second, asking about the lineage of the Tathāgata. There are five sections in the text: first, the question; second, the answer; third, the query; fourth, the explanation; fifth, the praise and commentary. This is the first. Previously, although saṃsāra is not the path, the bodhisattva transforms it into the Buddha path; now, although afflictions are the seeds of saṃsāra, sentient beings awaken to them as the lineage of the Tathāgata.
