阿難白佛言。未曾有也。世尊。如此香飯能作佛事　此下第二廣明佛事。大文有四。一明佛事隨化不同。二明佛身應緣故異。三明阿難伏罪。四明菩薩悔責前中文四。一稱歎。二廣說。三密呵。四解釋。此即初也。小乘唯知娑婆一化音聲為佛事。未知十方佛化六塵皆為佛事。故有此歎肇曰。餘本充體乃除結縛。未曾聞見也。

Ānanda said to the Buddha: "Unprecedented, World-Honoured One! Such fragrant rice can perform Buddha-activities!" / Below this, the second [major section] extensively explains Buddha-activities. The main text has four parts: 1. explaining that Buddha-activities differ according to teaching and transformation; 2. explaining that the Buddha's bodies differ according to responding to conditions; 3. explaining Ānanda admitting his fault; 4. explaining the bodhisattvas repenting and reproaching themselves. The first text has four: 1. praise; 2. extensive explanation; 3. subtle reproof; 4. explanation. This is the first. The Hinayāna only knows that in the Saha [world's] single transformation, sound constitutes Buddha-activities; they do not yet know that in the Buddha-transformations of the ten directions, all six sense objects constitute Buddha-activities. Hence there is this praise. Zhao says: "Food fundamentally nourishes the body, yet here it removes fetters—this is truly unprecedented and unheard of."
