維摩詰語舍利弗。於意云何。日光出時與冥合乎。答曰不也。日光出時則無眾冥維摩詰言。夫日何故行閻浮提。答欲以明照為之除冥　三質問。初問答明曰。光自明闇不能蔽。喻真身處染不染。後問答明曰。光能破彼闇。喻菩薩化生雜染。

Vimalakīrti said to Śāriputra: "What do you think? When the sunlight appears, does it merge with darkness?" He replied: "No. When the sunlight appears, all darkness is absent." Vimalakīrti said: "Why does the sun travel through Jambudvīpa?" He replied: "It wishes to illuminate with brightness and remove darkness for its sake." / Third, questioning. The first question and answer clarify: light is naturally bright, and darkness cannot obscure it; this illustrates that the true body dwelling in defilement is undefiled. The second question and answer clarify: light can destroy that darkness; this illustrates that the bodhisattva transforms beings in the midst of mixed defilement.
