'Lord of Devas, even suppose that a great trichiliocosm were filled with Tathāgatas, like sugarcane, bamboo, reeds, rice, hemp, groves, and forests. If there were a good man or good woman who, for an entire kalpa or less than a kalpa, reverently honoured, praised, made offerings to, and provided them with whatever gives ease; and after the parinirvāṇa of these Buddhas, built for each whole-body relic a seven-jeweled stūpa, extending across one four-continent world in breadth, reaching high up to the Brahmā heaven, adorned with spires, and made offerings to them with all kinds of flowers, incense, necklaces, banners, flags, and the most exquisitely wondrous music for a kalpa or less than a kalpa—in the mind of the Lord of Devas, what do you think? Would that person plant much merit or not?' This is second, comparative measurement. The text has four parts: this first raises the hypothetical case. The Buddhas of the great trichiliocosm are the supreme field of merit; giving ease and raising stūpas constitute offerings in two lifetimes—did this person plant much merit or not?
