"The Buddha expounds the Dharma with a single voice, / And sentient beings each, according to what they understand, / Universally are able to accept and practice it, gaining its benefit: / This is the unshared dharma of his spiritual power." These two lines praise unimpeded eloquence in meaning. To ordinary beings he shows the meaning of karmic cause and effect, good and evil; to the two vehicles he shows the meaning of impermanence, quiescent cessation, and so forth; to the Great Vehicle he shows the meaning of the true mark of neither arising nor ceasing. Sengzhao says: "Those fond of giving hear of giving; those fond of the precepts hear of the precepts. Each receives and practices differently, obtaining their distinct benefits: either the diverse pleasures of humans and devas, or the nirvāṇa of the two vehicles, or ultimate bodhi. Moistened by a single rain, the three kinds of grass are distinct. How could this be shared with the two vehicles?"
