"If Maitreya attains anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, then all sentient beings should also attain it. Why is this? All sentient beings are themselves the mark of bodhi." Second, this refutes it in terms of the equality of inherent awakening, which is the virtue of wisdom. Bodhi is translated here as awakening, and also as wisdom; it refers to the markless ultimate wisdom, the equal inherent awakening. If afflictions are identical with bodhi, then all sentient beings are of the mark of bodhi. How could Maitreya alone attain it? Sengzhao says: The mark of the markless is the mark of bodhi. Daosheng says: Since bodhi is markless, it is the discourse of the ultimate wisdom of the principle. One who attains it attains this mark of bodhi.
