2.11

"Thereupon, the bodhisattvas, great disciples, and Śakra, Brahmā, and the Four Heavenly Kings within the assembly all had this thought: 'Now these two great beings, Mañjuśrī and Vimalakīrti, will converse together; they will surely expound the wondrous Dharma.' Instantly eight thousand bodhisattvas, five hundred śrāvakas, and hundreds of thousands of devas and humans all wished to follow them"—the attendance of the great assembly has two parts in the text: first, their thoughts; second, their going. This is the first, their thoughts. Sengzhao says: "At a superior assembly of mahāsattvas there must be a wondrous exposition, so practically all wished to go along together."
