"The seven stations of consciousness are the lineage." The seven dharmas: the humans and devas of the desire realm, the first consciousness station of the first dhyāna at the beginning of the kalpa; the second consciousness station of the second dhyāna; the third consciousness station of the third dhyāna; the fourth consciousness station of the stage of infinite space; the fifth consciousness station of the stage of infinite consciousness; the sixth consciousness station of the stage of nothingness—the seven consciousness stations. [Kumāra]jīva says: "'Consciousness station' means that consciousness attains a secure dwelling. Thoughts of consciousness are clear and distinct, free from affliction and trouble. That which is unmarred is a consciousness station. In the bad destinies, it is marred by painful suffering; in the fourth dhyāna, it is marred by non-conception; in [the station of] neither-perception-[nor-non-perception] and the cessation attainment, it is marred. Furthermore, in that stage, mental perceptions are subtle and faint, thoughts are not distinct, and therefore consciousness does not dwell securely."
