"Destroying the thieves of defilement, / His heroic bravery none can surpass; / Subduing the four classes of māras, / He erects the banner of victory at the bodhimaṇḍa." / From here on, three [sections] clarify his activities and functions. This verse clarifies the completion of his own deeds; the twenty-seven verses below clarify the salvation of beings. Just as a worldly person, having achieved success and rich emolument, bestows relief upon the poor, this is the beginning of it. Zhao says: "According to foreign customs, when breaking the enemy in battle, one erects a banner to signal victory. The bodhisattva destroys the thieves of defilement and subdues the four māra-enemies, thus erecting the sign of victory at the bodhimaṇḍa."
