The Bodhisattva Sunetra said, "A single characteristic and the absence of characteristics constitute duality. If one knows that a single characteristic is itself the absence of characteristics, and also does not grasp at the absence of characteristics, entering into equality, this is entering the dharma gate of non-duality."
The Lotus Sutra illuminates the one true mark; the Prajñāpāramitā sūtras illuminate the absence of characteristics. Sengzhao says, "Speaking of 'one' is intended to remove 'two', not to assert oneness; speaking of 'absence' is intended to remove 'existence', not to assert nothingness. Yet the deluded, upon hearing 'one', grasp at the characteristic of oneness, and upon hearing 'absence', grasp at the characteristic of absence. Hence duality arises."
