By his supernormal power he showed the great assembly: in the upper direction, past Buddha lands as numerous as the sands of forty-two Ganges Rivers, there is a country named Sarvagandhasugandhā. The Buddha is called Gandhahastin, and is present right now. The fragrance of that country, compared to the fragrances of humans and devas in the Buddha worlds of the ten directions, is foremost of all. In that land there are no names of śrāvakas or pratyekabuddhas; there is only a pure assembly of great bodhisattvas for whom the Buddha preaches the Dharma. Everything in that realm is made of fragrance: the multi-storied pavilions, the aromatic ground for walking meditation, and the parks and gardens are all fragrant. The fragrance of their food circulates universally through the immeasurable worlds of the ten directions. At that time, that Buddha and the bodhisattvas had just sat together to eat. There were devaputras all named Sugandhālaṃkāra, who had all aroused the mind of anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, making offerings to that Buddha and the bodhisattvas.
This is the second: manifesting the pure land. ‘Sarvagandhasugandhā’ and ‘Gandhahastin’ and so forth show the names of circumstantial and direct retribution. There are no two-vehicle companions, so the retinue is pure. Made of fragrance into pavilions and so forth means circumstantial retribution is pure; sitting to eat and so forth means the Buddha-work is pure.
