Then Vimalakīrti immediately entered samādhi.
This is the second [section], “Mutually Roaming in Pure and Impure [Lands].” The text has three parts: first, clarifying how the two dharmas mutually transform; second, clarifying how the Buddha-activities of the two lands differ; third, clarifying relinquishing impurity to be born in purity. Within the first part are two: first, clarifying going from the impure to roam in the pure; second, clarifying coming from that purity to the impure. Within the former part are three: first, manifesting the pure land; second, seeking one to go; third, manifesting an emanation to go. The first part has three [points]; this is the first, entering samādhi. [Seng]rui says: “Samādhi in Qin speech is ‘correct mind.’ There are two kinds: first, attained through cultivated transformation; second, attained through karmic retribution. Samādhi is utterly without entering or emerging—how could there be entering or emerging, much less for the dharmakāya? Now to speak of entering, is this not why it is a trace?”
