When those mahāsattvas saw the emanation bodhisattva, they marveled, having never seen such before: “From where has this superior person come? Where is the Sahā world located? What is meant by ‘those who delight in lesser dharmas’?” They immediately asked the Buddha about this.
Below this is the third [part], clarifying that those mahāsattvas were astonished. The text has four parts. This is the first, praising and questioning. Within the questions are three: first, asking where he came from—it should say who emanated him to come, namely that Jingming emanated him; second, asking the location of Sahā—Sahā is rendered here as ‘mixed assembly,’ because defiled and evil sentient beings gather together in one place; it is also rendered as ‘endurance,’ because only the Buddha Śākyamuni is able to endure dwelling there; third, asking what is meant by ‘those who delight in lesser dharmas.’ Zhao says: “That land is purely Mahāyāna, and they have not heard the name of delighting in lesser dharmas; hence this question.”
