The Buddha told them, “In the lower region, past Buddha lands as numerous as forty-two Ganges sands, there is a world named Sahā. The Buddha is called Śākyamuni, and is present right now in the evil world of the five turbidities, expounding the teachings of the Way for sentient beings who delight in lesser dharmas. There is a bodhisattva named Vimalakīrti who abides in inconceivable liberation and preaches the Dharma for the bodhisattvas. Therefore he sent an emanation to come, praising my name and extolling this land, in order to cause those bodhisattvas to increase their merit.”
This is the second, answering the three questions. “Forty-two Ganges sands” skips ahead to answer the second question regarding the place from which he came. “Present right now in the five turbidities” and so forth answers the third question regarding the reason for preaching the lesser [dharma]. “There is a bodhisattva named Vimalakīrti” answers back to the first question regarding the one capable of emanating. Śākya is translated here as ‘capable of nature’; Muni is translated here as ‘silent fame.’
