Mañjuśrī said: "Householder, what characteristics does this illness have?" Below, this is the third [part], inquiring about the characteristics of the illness with reference to the dharmakāya. As for why there is this repeated inquiry, [Dao]rong says: "There are two gates for entering the Buddha-dharma: the first is great compassion, and the second is wisdom. Proceeding from the shallow to the deep, because propagating it has [levels of] shallowness, he first spoke of great compassion and afterwards spoke of the true mark." In the text, the questions and answers are threefold, and this is the first. [Seng]zhao says: "Having known the origin of the arising of the illness, [he now asks about] the characteristics of the illness that has arisen. The four hundred and four illnesses each have distinct characteristics; what characteristic does the illness of great compassion have? Intending to clarify that one who responds to beings to manifest illness without [a substantial] great compassion, though manifesting illness all day long, is all day long devoid of characteristics."
