Regarding Dharma Master Rui: The Biographies of Eminent Monks states: The Dharma Master was a native of Changle in Weijun. He went forth from household life at an early age, and at twenty-two he was broadly versed in sūtras and treatises. While listening to Dharma Master Senglang lecture on the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra, he frequently raised criticisms and difficulties. Lang had a lofty and extraordinary rapport with his teacher Sengxian, and said to Xian: "Rui has recently raised difficulties; though I have pondered them repeatedly, I cannot resolve them. He can truly be called worthy." Xian's disciple Kumārajīva arrived in Qin, and [the ruler] ordered Rui into the Xiaoyao Garden to examine the translations. The Qin King Xing asked Yao Song: "What kind of person is Master Rui?" Song replied: "He is truly a pine and cypress of Ye and Wei." Xing summoned him for an audience; observing his demeanor, deep flow, and refined and abundant eloquence, he said to Song: "This is indeed a leader of the four seas; why speak only of a pine and cypress of Ye and Wei?" When Shi produced the Satyasiddhi Śāstra, he ordered Rui to lecture on it. Shi said: "This treatise refutes the Abhidharma in seven places, but the wording is somewhat obscure. If you can understand it without asking, you may be called an extraordinary talent." Rui revealed its profound subtleties and indeed accorded with the mysterious meeting without consulting Shi. When Shi translated the Lotus Sūtra up to the Bestowal of Prophecy Chapter, the old version read: "Devas see humans, humans see devas." Shi said: "These words agree with the Western Regions, but their phrasing is too plain." Rui responded immediately: "Could it not be: 'Humans and devas interact, and both are able to see one another'?" Shi praised him, saying: "In my translation work, having obtained you, I truly have no regrets!" Furthermore, in all his undertakings praising the Buddha, he vowed to be born in Anyang. Whenever walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, he never turned his back to the west. At the time of his passing, he joined his palms, and five-colored light emerged from Rui. He also composed a commentary on this sūtra and wrote a preface, as noted in the separate commentary.
