And four hundred yojanas. / Next there are adamantine clouds, / Pouring rain to fill its interior. / First the realm of the Brahmā King is formed, / In sequence reaching the Four Heavenly Kings; / Following this, the stations of sentient beings are formed: / Sumeru, the seven mountain ranges, and so forth, / North, west, east, and south, / Hungry ghosts and animals, / Down to the realm of hells. / Passing through one increase and decrease, / Only then is the receptacle world established. / Those whose merit in the second dhyāna is exhausted / Are born down in the continent of Jambudvīpa; / Their bodily size being twice as tall, / What they eat is only the earth's taste. / When the taste vanishes, they eat floating vapor; / When the vapor disappears, they eat non-glutinous rice. / Because greed arises, it is not digested, / Whereupon there are excrement and urine; / Their bodily radiance disappears through greed, / And the sun and moon arise from this. / Male and female forms become distinct, / And based on this sexual desire arises; / Dividing the land to protect the non-glutinous rice, / Grasping and stealing arise when giving is indicated. / Establishing a lord who acts arrogant and appoints judges, / The sin of killing arises from this; / Guarding one's own while violating another's wife, / Because of this there is sexual misconduct; / The ten non-virtuous actions arise in succession, / And according to sins humans enter the three evil destinies. / When one person is born into Avīci, / This is called the completion of the kalpa of formation; / Then arise the retributions for good and evil, / And there are beings who gather goodness. / First born in the north, west, and east, / From the first heaven up to the Brahmā realm; / Being born in succession like this, / The time spans ninety kalpas. / When one person is first born in the Brahmā [realm], / That is first called the beginning of the kalpa of formation; / Gradually being born up to Trāyastriṃśa, / It is then called the completion of the kalpa of formation. / Thereafter, twenty increases and decreases— / This is then called the kalpa of abiding. / Eighty turns of increase and decrease / Only then make one great kalpa. / Calamitous fires arise in succession, / And after that one wind calamity; / Seven times seven fires and seven waters, / Only then is there one wind calamity. / Fire first arises from Avīci, / Reaching upward to destroy the first dhyāna; / Next, seven fires and one water, / In eight kalpas destroy the second dhyāna. / Because in that Heaven of Ultimate Radiance and Purity, / The measure of lifespan is like this: / Eight times seven fires and seven waters, / Together with that one wind calamity, / In sixty-four great kalpas / Destroy the third dhyāna of Universal Purity. / When the small three calamities arise: / From eighty thousand years decreasing by one every hundred years, / When reaching thirty years, famine occurs / For seven years, seven months, and seven days; / At twenty kalpas, the calamity of pestilence, / Its months and days also spanning seven; / At ten years, weapons for merely seven days. / From this it doubles and increases again, / Increasing up to eighty thousand years; / This is called the extreme of increase. / Gathering these extremes of increase and decrease, / This is called one medium kalpa. (The verses below this regarding the three small calamities explain the text on famine and so forth within a medium kalpa.) / The Gate of the Dharma of Non-Duality
