"Having spoken these words, casting the five limbs to the ground, they bow everywhere to the Buddhas of the ten directions, and with palms joined, kneeling upright, they should speak these words: 'The faults and perils of this tongue are immeasurable and boundless; the thorns of all evil karma arise from the tongue faculty, and the cessation of the wheel of the true Dharma arises from this tongue. Such an evil tongue cuts off the seeds of merit, forcefully arguing on many fronts about what is not the truth, praising wrong views like adding firewood to a fire, harming living beings like a raging fire, and dying without sore or boil like one who has drunk poison. For such retribution of sinful, evil, and unwholesome deeds, one must fall into the evil destinies for hundreds of kalpas and thousands of kalpas; because of false speech one falls into the great hells. I now take refuge in the Buddhas of the southern direction and confess my dark evils.'
