The Buddha said to Ānanda: "After the Buddha's parinirvāṇa, if any disciple of the Buddha repents of evil and unwholesome karma, they should only chant and recite the Mahāyāna scriptures. These vaipulya sūtras are the eyes of the Buddhas; through them the Buddhas are endowed with the five eyes, and the three bodies of the Buddha are born from the vaipulya; they are the great seal of the Dharma, sealing the ocean of nirvāṇa. From within such an ocean can be produced the three pure bodies of the Buddha. These three bodies are the field of merit for humans and devas, supreme among those worthy of offerings. If anyone chants and recites the great vaipulya scriptures, you should know that this person is endowed with the Buddha's merit, their evils are eternally eliminated, and they are born from the Buddha's wisdom."
