1.38

經曰是佛弟子修孝順等者　述曰。三勸常修也。若勸慈行即念念追思。若濟其親即年年設供斯即孝盡於始終。亦行極於事親也。然則財於老時無用措時為子孫故。盆於孝者。無施子宜午月恒獻故。

[When] the sūtra states, 'These disciples of the Buddha who cultivate filial obedience,' and so forth: The commentary says: The third is encouraging constant cultivation. If one encourages compassionate conduct, in thought after thought one will recall them; if one delivers one's parents, year after year one will set out offerings. In this way filial piety is realized from beginning to end, and practice reaches its culmination in serving one's parents. Wealth is useless in old age; it is hoarded for the sake of children and grandchildren. For those of filial devotion, the basin requires no prodigal expense; it should always be offered in the middle month [of autumn].
