The precept against soliciting robes from unrelated householders, the sixth: In general, those who have gone forth should be content, keeping the three robes complete. If conditions along the path are lacking, only then may they broadly solicit. Increasing greed and distressing others invites worldly censure and fault, causing no small harm; therefore the Sage enacted the precept. The specific conditions are six: 1. the three robes are complete; 2. there are no special circumstances; 3. it is an unrelated householder; 4. one solicits an allowable robe for oneself; 5. the other gives it; 6. receiving it into one's hand immediately constitutes an offense. Deficient conditions can be understood by analogy. Below is the precept text proper. This precept was enacted because Upananda forcibly demanded a robe from a householder, causing people to criticize and despise him, so the Buddha enacted the precept.
