Eleventh precept: On using mixed wild-silkworm floss to make a sleeping mat. The reason for its formulation is truly that precious goods are difficult to obtain, cause harm to living beings, and invite public criticism; they increase greed and obstruct the Path, being among the greatest of faults, so the Sage formulated this. There are five specific conditions: 1. It is kauśeya; 2. Begging for it; 3. Making a sleeping mat; 4. For oneself; 5. Committing an offense upon making it when begging. The Sarvāstivāda-vinaya-vibhāṣā states that kauśeya is the name for silk floss. Below, the text of the precept is properly explained. This precept was formulated because the group of six went to a silkworm-raising household to beg for silk floss, the householders criticized and censured them, the bhikṣus reported the fault, and the Buddha thereupon formulated the precept.
