Precept 24: Encouraging and praising a weaver to weave extra cloth into a robe. Intent of the formulation: A faithfully devoted householder, with pure intentions, prepares thread for a bhikṣu to weave three robes. One ought to receive it in accordance with the donation, internally maintaining a mind of frugality and integrity, and externally not troubling the donor. Now, however, one encourages and praises the weaver and personally offers payment, harming the owner of the thread and ruining one's own mental conduct, which brings benefit to neither party. Therefore the Sage formulated the rule. The specific conditions are six: 1. the householder of their own mind prepares thread and sends it to the weaver to weave; 2. the intended measure has a limit; 3. knowing it has a limit; 4. offering payment to encourage weaving; 5. the weaver increases the thread for him; 6. accepting it, whereupon the offense is committed. Below, the prātimokṣa text is properly clarified. This precept arose from Upananda, who went to a householder's home, selected thread, gave it to the weaver, and furthermore promised payment. The householders ridiculed and criticized him; the bhikṣus raised the fault; and the Buddha thereupon formulated the precept.
