"If a bhikṣu spreads Saṅgha bedding in a Saṅgha room, whether he spreads it himself or has someone spread it, whether for sitting or lying down, and upon leaving does not take it up himself or have [someone take it up], it is a prāyaścittika." / In this full text of the precept, there are five clauses: first, the person committing the offense; second, the secluded place; third, the use of Saṅgha property; fourth, for one's own use; fifth, from "upon leaving" onward, concluding with the offense for not putting it away. / "Bhikṣu": the meaning is as above. / "Saṅgha room": a secluded place. / "Saṅgha bedding": refers to felt mats on rope beds or wooden beds, sitting mats down to sleeping felts. / Fourth, "whether he spreads it himself or has someone spread it": this is for one's own use. / Fifth, "upon leaving does not take it up himself or have someone take it up, it is a prāyaścittika": this is the offense of not putting it away. / The Vinaya states: "When he leaves, he should tell a resident bhikṣu, saying: 'Securely put it away for me.' If there is no one and there is no fear of loss, he should move the bed away from the wall, raise the bed legs, take the felt mats and bedding and place them wrapped inside, and cover them with other layers. If he fears they will be ruined, he should take the bedding and place it on a clothes rack, secure the bed, and leave. If he does not act like this, stepping outside the boundary constitutes a prāyaścittika. If, intending to leave, he turns back with remorse, it is a duṣkṛta. If he is to return on the same day, not remaining away long, he is permitted two nights outside the boundary; on the third night, before the break of dawn, if he either arrives at the room himself or sends a messenger to inform the manager to protect and care for it, [he does not offend]; if not, as soon as dawn breaks he commits an offense." / Exceptions: acting according to the expedients above; or if the water or land routes are cut off, or because of dangers to life or to brahma-practice, it is permitted.
