Precept 16: Forcibly spreading bedding. / The intention behind its enactment: Materials are limited and matters are confined between this party and that party. When feelings are in accord, then I belong to the other; when sentiments are divided, matters must be accepted or declined. However, knowing that another has already obtained a dwelling place, one nevertheless makes no consideration and arbitrarily spreads one's bedding by force in their midst. Mutual crowding and possessiveness are not the conduct of a renunciant; therefore the Buddha enacted [this precept]. / There are six specific conditions: first, [another] has previously obtained a dwelling place and has already settled there; second, knowing that the other has settled first; third, intending to annoy him; fourth, spreading bedding by force; fifth, having no [valid] reason—meaning there is no reason such as looking after an old friend, sickness, or the two perils; sixth, incurring a prāyaścittika as soon as one lies down. Below, the text of the precept is directly clarified. This precept was enacted because the group of six monks annoyed the group of seventeen monks; therefore the Buddha enacted this precept.
