Precept 23: Criticizing the Instructing Master / Regarding the intention behind establishing [this precept]: When a person endowed with virtue receives the saṅgha's deputation and is sent to instruct with a compassionate heart, his intention is for the sake of the Dharma, not craving food and drink. Yet seeing him obtain material gain, another conceives jealousy within, speaks criticism and rebukes, and disturbs the virtuous. This puts an end to mutual benefit, and the harm is not light; therefore the Sage established [this precept]. / There are six specific conditions: first, being deputed by the saṅgha; second, his intention being for the sake of the Dharma without craving food and drink; third, giving rise to a jealous mind; fourth, uttering criticism; fifth, the words being clear; sixth, the other person hearing and understanding, whereupon one commits the offense. Below, the precept is properly explained. This precept arose because the nuns welcomed the instructing master and made offerings to him. The group of six conceived a jealous thought and said, "He has no true merit; he instructs the nuns solely for the sake of food and drink." The bhikṣus reported this to the Buddha; the Buddha thereupon established the precept.
