The fourteenth precept: on rugs kept for less than six years. / The intention of the prohibition: one previously has an old rug, and it has not yet completed six years; it is sufficient to sustain the body, and once the Path is advanced, one should cease; if one does not relinquish the old one and again makes a new one, this increases greed, obstructs the Path, and invites worldly blame and fault; therefore the Holy One prohibited it. / There are six specific conditions: 1. Having an old rug for less than six years; 2. Not relinquishing the old one to give to another; 3. The saṅgha not granting permission; 4. Making another new one; 5. Doing so for oneself; 6. An offense is incurred as soon as it is finished. Below, the precept text itself is clarified. This precept also arose because the group of six monks were constantly procuring rugs; hence the Buddha instituted the precept. Therein are three parts: 1. the brief prohibition; 2. the subsequent allowance upon petition; 3. the extensive prohibition. Now the extensive precept text is clarified.
