“If a bhikṣu makes an appointment with a woman to travel along the same single road, even [just] between villages, it is a prāyaścittika.” This full precept has five clauses in its text: first, the person committing the offense; second, the party with whom one travels; third, making an appointment together; fourth, travelling along the same road; fifth, determination of the offense. The first clause is self-evident. Second, “woman”: as explained above. Third, “makes an appointment together”: the Vinaya states that it means saying, “Let us go together to a certain village, city, or country.” Fourth, “travels along the same single road, even between villages”: the Vinaya states that it refers to a place of travel that has demarcations. Fifth, “it is a prāyaścittika”: the Vinaya states that travelling within a single village boundary incurs one fall [into an offense]; travelling within multiple villages incurs multiple falls consecutively. The rest of the text is as explained before under the precept on travelling together with a nun. As for exemptions: if one did not know beforehand; if one did not make an appointment; if one must go there to find safety; or if there are difficulties involving physical coercion and the like—all these are exempt and not an offense.
