The forty-ninth precept on staying overnight with an army beyond the limit when having a reason. The specific conditions are five: 1. Having a cause or condition, going to stay overnight in an army; 2. Having already spent two nights; 3. On the third night, not leaving the range of sight and hearing; 4. Absence of cause or condition—meaning that if the two roads are cut off or there are dangers to life or pure conduct and one does not leave, there is no offense; 5. Passing three nights and the break of dawn appearing constitutes the offense. Below is the proper explanation of the Prātimokṣa text. This precept was instituted because the group of six had a reason to go and stay overnight in an army, laypersons criticized them, bhikṣus pointed out their fault, and the Buddha instituted the precept.
