Forty-nine: raising the hand to strike with an angry mind. Here too, when the ṣaḍvargika monks were no longer permitted to strike, they then raised their fingers to simulate striking, making the others terrified and weep. In general, whether with hand, foot, or staff, raising it to threaten a person is in every case an offense of pāyattika. If one raises another part of the body, it is a duṣkṛta. There is no offense if it is to guard against venomous beasts or evil persons.
