Fifty-five: [saying,] "I understand the Dharma taught by the Buddha: acts declared obstructive cannot obstruct the path" [is an offense of pāyattika]. The brahmacārin *Kāda wished to slander the Buddha's Dharma, so he had his disciple Asita go forth and receive ordination, telling him to say: "Practicing sensual desire or not cannot obstruct the path." Having gone forth, he was unable to slander it. His master came and pressured him to speak, and emotionally he could not refuse, yet he was still terrified and did not dare speak openly; thus he spoke arrogantly: "Acts declared [obstructive] cannot obstruct the path." When he spoke these words, his tongue could not move. The Buddha said: "One should first admonish him with gentle words. If he renounces it upon gentle admonition, have him repent with a duṣkṛta. If he does not renounce it, perform a jñapti-caturtha-karman for him, binding and prodding him to renounce it. If after being lawfully admonished three times he does not renounce it, it is an offense of pāyattika." A jñapti-caturtha-karman should be performed for him; if his evil view is not eliminated, he is expelled (pravrājana), but when he regains right view, he is permitted to repent his transgression. These two evil statements slander and destroy the Buddha's Dharma; because the matter is grave, the assembly admonishes him up to three times, employing skillful means to entice and lead him, wishing to make him turn back on his own; therefore the formulated offense is not grave, nor is he permanently expelled (nāśana). One who raises such evil grasping and does not renounce it should be disciplined in this way.
