五十六若知是人如是語不如法悔不捨惡邪見故若畜使共事共一房舍宿墮　六群比丘知阿私咜惡邪被儐。而教畜之。將增長外道。毀滅正法。邪惡之徒不可復制。因是結戒。不聽畜止。知是人者知其以惡邪被儐。如是語邪謗語也。不如法悔除邪心不捨。僧如法儐而返畜之。畜有二種。或共行畜。或近畜。共事共財共法共法者。一切羯磨說戒自恣。十四種人一切僧事。又四種舍中而共宿止。若教法若從受法一一犯墮。若與衣鉢飯食寢臥湯藥。若從彼受亦一一墮。凡共畜共事一切中一一墮。若共宿時臥已起已起臥。起臥悉犯墮。若通夜不臥犯突吉羅也。

Fifty-six: if one knows that this person speaks thus, has not repented according to the Dharma, and has not renounced his evil views, and keeps him, engages in activities with him, or lodges with him in the same room, it is an offense of pāyattika. The ṣaḍvargika monks knew that Asita had been expelled for his evil view, yet they harbored and kept him. This would foster non-Buddhists and destroy the correct Dharma, and evil factions would no longer be restrainable. Because of this, the precept was formulated, not allowing one to harbor and keep him. "Knowing this person" means knowing that he was expelled because of an evil view. "Speaks thus" refers to his evil, slanderous words. "Has not repented according to the Dharma" means he has not abandoned his evil mind. The saṃgha lawfully expelled him, yet they took him in. Keeping has two kinds: keeping by associating with him, or keeping by having him close by; sharing activities, sharing wealth, or sharing the Dharma. "Sharing the Dharma" means all karmas, recitation of the precepts, and pravāraṇā, the fourteen kinds of persons, and all saṃgha affairs. Moreover, lodging together in four kinds of dwellings—whether teaching him the Dharma or receiving the Dharma from him—each is an offense of pāyattika. If one gives him robes, bowls, food, bedding, or medicines, or receives them from him, each is also a pāyattika. In all cases of harboring him or sharing activities with him, each is a pāyattika. When lodging together, lying down, getting up, and then lying down again—each lying down and getting up is an offense of pāyattika. If one does not lie down for the entire night, it is a duṣkṛta.
